Emancipation

When Rural Ways started college . . . um . . . more than twenty years ago, we borrowed money to do it. Since that time, we have been "in debt" in one form or another. While there is "good" debt (asset backed mortgages) and "bad" debt (consumer credit cards), owing money feels enslaving to us and it is something we have worked to eliminate. Well, we've succeeded. For the first time since the mid-1980s we owe nothing. Rural Ways is debt free. No credit cards, no student loans, no car payments, no mortgages, nothing. Independence Day.

  1. That's a beautiful thing! If that debt clock is real data then you didn't just pay them off, you beat your loans into submission.

  2. Real data. I'd probably be embarassed to say where we started, but we have been single-minded about the pursuit of freedom ever since.

  3. I can't believe you've had a $16k swing from January to now. That's pretty amazing. We've been consumer debt free since ~2005...but that's nothing compared to what you've done here. Way to go. -Jess

  4. Thanks, Jess. I've used the terms "relentless" and "single-minded" to describe our efforts. I mean, the family has been willing to skip groceries for the week when we can collect a pot of grubs from under a rotting log. Just kidding. But, the whole family has pitched-in to be as frugal and cost-conscious as possible.
