Sometimes when you're out looking around, especially when there is snow, you'll start to notice that you're walking where the coyote walks. I know this sounds vaguely aboriginal, but it's not. It's just that, at least for me, I prefer walking where it is easy. Evidently, he does too. (The only difference is that the coyote doesn't mind low branches. The coyote's preferred easy walking space is within two or three feet of the ground, mine is twice that.)
The other day I played hooky from work and wondered over to Coral Pink Sand Dunes SP, hoping the mid-week, mid-December timing would be enough to avert the motorized riffraff that normally plagues the place. I was right, the ranger was glad to see someone, the entire place was deserted - save the coyotes. Their tracks were everywhere and indicative of their IQ, traveling with the natural flow of the dunes. There was one that broke into a run and converged with a rabbit, but the tracks showed that the rabbit escaped, leaving the dog to saunter on along the ridge of the dune. While there were no trees to duck, they too were traveling where it was easy, where it was smart.
ReplyDeleteI've removed the CPSDSP from my map. I hope never to see it again. Thanks for taking the risk yourself. You've provided my other two readers a dispatch from behind the lines.
